Salary
Expectations
When I began my legal career as a receptionist/legal
secretary, I took whatever salary the law firm offered to get
my foot in the door.
My negotiation strength as a newcomer to the field was
“0”.
After I had several months experience, I “traded up” to
a better paying position with another law firm and asked for
approximately $2,000.00 more per year than I had made
previously. Even
though I had only one year of legal experience, I was able to
ask for more money because during my interview I could
describe in great detail what my skills
were.
During your first year in the legal field, keep track
of the new skills that you learn – it will pay off in future
salary negotiations whether you stay with your current firm or
not.
Visit www.salary.com for information
concerning what salary to expect for the job you desire and
the region you live in.
Remember, the salary shown is an
approximation.
I read an advertisement online for a school in my state
who offers classes for legal assistants (they shall go
unnamed). They
stated that the starting salary range for legal assistants
averages $39,000.
While I wish the starting salary was that high, it is
not, unless you live in New York
City, possibly.
Let’s keep the dream but let’s keep it very realistic,
also.
This is another reason to network with other folks in
the legal field.
Once you establish a friendship within a Yahoo group or
even within your local legal association, ask what the
starting salary would be for someone with your experience
level.
