This presentation will include an overview of what to expect when a client is audited by the Internal Revenue Service and how to avoid an IRS audit. This presentation will also describe the IRS collection process including IRS liens and levies. Options to resolve IRS tax liabilities will be discussed. These options include being put in currently-not-collectible status, entering into a guaranteed, streamlined, or express installment agreement with the Internal Revenue Service, and offers-in-compromise which can reduce a taxpayer’s overall tax liability. The presentation will also cover the kinds of penalties which may be imposed by the Internal Revenue Service and potential defenses to these penalties. Finally, the presentation will cover innocent spouse relief, which can be used as a defense to IRS tax liabilities. We will cover relief from tax due to an erroneous item of a spouse on a joint tax return, separation of liability relief, equitable relief, and relief from tax on community property income, as well as how to request relief from joint and several liability.
